Fast, Remedial Roofing Solution
Challenge
An inner city health & medical facility in Christchurch had a roof which was covered in an old membrane that had been leaking, with many repair attempts having been made by torching patches on the leaking areas.
This was causing aggravation for the tenant and anxiety to the building owner. The Owner needed a short-term solution to make the building watertight asap for minimal financial outlay.
Solution
Viking SilCoat was recommended to make the roof watertight once again. The five-year product warranty on SilCoat provided him with at least five years to decide on a longer term solution.
To prepare the SilCoat application, the roof was pressure-washed, repaired where required using proprietary materials, and primed with SilCoat water-based primer. Two coats of silicone (the building owner chose SilCoat in white) were then applied to the roof.
The roof had a central internal gutter, upstands and several penetrations, including an air conditioning unit. These are all potential leak points in a roofing system, so the fact that SilCoat is liquid-based meant that the application was very easy – these ‘problem’ areas could simply be painted around/over and sealed watertight. The quick nature of the application meant that the Viking Approved Applicator completed the entire 800m2 project in less than six days – a speedy repair.
Result
The ease and speed with which the roof was made watertight impressed all parties concerned – both the tenant and owner were extremely pleased with the end result – so much so that they began talking again! The owner was so impressed with the result that he expressed his desire to use SilCoat to repair his other properties. The Viking Approved Applicator also loved SilCoat, highlighting the ease and practicality of use of the system.
