How can a roof be so easy on the eye? Re-roof it with Viking Highland Slate Asphalt Shingles
Challenge
The owners of a beautiful river-front property in Hamilton were very disappointed to discover that their old asphalt shingle roof had been installed with staples instead of nails and the staples had begun to loosen…letting water into the roof’s substrate.
Instead of addressing the issue in patches, they decided to replace the whole roof.
Solution
Despite this setback, this provided an opportunity to improve the aesthetics and quality of their roof from both material and installation perspectives. The homeowners decided to re-roof with Viking CertainTeed ‘Highland Slate’ Shingle. This profile was an improvement, but not a significant departure from the look of the existing shingle and the ‘black granite’ colour they chose, suited their style of home.
CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles create a completely waterproof and highly durable roofing system. The shingles themselves are composed of a strong fibre-glass mat base. Asphalt is factory-applied over this and ceramic-coated mineral granules are embedded in the water-resistant asphalt to provide protection from New Zealand’s harsh UV. With a heavy-duty construction, Highland Slate shingles are designed to handle the toughest weather extremes, with a wind resistance of up to 205kmph which deems them compliant for wind zones classified as ‘Extra High’ when installed with a specified nailing and sealing pattern.
Through the use of texture and tone of traditional slate and individually coloured bevelled tabs, the BRANZ-appraised Viking CertainTeed Highland Slate Shingles bring a contemporary look and striking contrast to any building. Just as importantly, the Highland Slate profile comes with a Viking 50-year product warranty.
This Viking CertainTeed Highland Slate re-roof was completed by a Viking Approved Applicator with experience in installing roofs with a steeper pitch which was certainly the case with this home. Steeper roofs are more challenging to install than lower-slope, however the applicator took the extra time and care required to ensure the end-result was completed to a world-class standard.
Result
The homeowners were thrilled with the transformation of their home; commenting on the fact that the new style compliments the architecture even more than the previous shingle. Additionally, they have 50 years of warranted protection from a roof system installed to specification by a Viking approved applicator. They also have the shingle sector’s most sophisticated ventilation system and a shingle manufactured and installed to withstand extreme weather conditions.
After the disappointment of their old roof, the owners now have a warm, dry and future-proof home.
